Hair Loss is a big concern for a lot of the men and women that I see in my practice. It’s very distressing for people to experience hair loss and can cause a lot of anxiety. People usually come into a naturopathic doctor’s office to rule out underlying health issues associated with hair loss especially hormonal issues. We check the thyroid, assess for nutrient deficiencies and we may order some hormone testing especially after a pregnancy. Here is a DIY recipe that my patient’s love using to boost hair growth:

Combine the following essential oils:

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) 3 drops

Lavender (Lavandula augustifolia) 3 drops

Thyme (Thyme vulgaris) 2 drops

Add all essential oils to a carrier oil- 20 ml castor oil or coconut oil. Castor oil is preferable for women with heavy periods for the iron content. Please note that it is thick and sticky so you will need a good rinse in the morning if you use this before bed!

Massage the oils into the affected area for a minimum of 2 minutes.

Wrap a warm towel around to aid absorption of the oils.

Leave on overnight.

For severe hair loss- use this technique every night for a minimum of 3 months. Best results are seen after 7 months but may be seen in the first 6 weeks. This recipe comes from a clinical study where 50% of study participants showed improvement in hair growth using this treatment. Arch Dermatol. 1998;134:1349-1352

For mild to moderate hair loss- use 3x/week.
