If you have muscle cramps after working out or restless legs at night you might benefit from a magnesium supplement. Of course, always ask your naturopath when starting a new supplement.

Magnesium is a smooth muscle relaxant. We tend to have lower levels of this nutrient since our soil is not as rich with this mineral as it used to be. There are different types of Magnesium.

Magnesium Glycinate is great for muscle tension. Some people use it after work outs and before bed to prevent restless legs and magnesium also has the added benefit of being a central nervous system relaxant so it helps us feel calm to fall asleep.

Magnesium Oxide is not very absorbable. We don’t suggest this one for this reason.

Magnesium Citrate is a stronger laxative in comparison to other types of magnesium. We usually use this one if someone wants more of a laxative effect from their supplement.

Magnesium rich foods include almonds, dark chocolate and avocados. I do have to say it, even though I don’t always follow this rule, keep to a serving size of dark chocolate, but otherwise these foods can be good to eat post work out.

Ask your naturopath if you think you could benefit from a magnesium supplement.
